One of our favorite programs is all about Owls. And this is the perfect time of year to read some of our absolute favorite stories.

Book of Sleep
by Il Sung Nu
Little Owl Lost by Chris Haughton
Lazy Ozzie by Michael Coleman
Owly by Mike Thaler
Wake Up Oliver by Sue Hendra
Bear's New Friend by Karma Wilson

Good Night Owl by Pat Hutchins

Songs
Owl in the Tree (sung to the tune of "Skip to My Lou")

Owl in the tree goes, “Hoo, hoo hoo,”
Owl in the tree goes, “Hoo, hoo hoo,”
Owl in the tree goes, “Hoo, hoo hoo,”
Skip to my lou, my darling.

Robin in the nest goes, “Tweet, tweet, tweet…”
Duck in the pond goes, “Quack, quack, quack…”
Rooster in the yard goes, “Cock a doodle doo…”

Poem

The Owl

There's a wide-eyed owl (circle fingers around eyes)
With a pointed nose (point to nose)
Two pointed ears (point to ears)
And claws for tows (touch toes)
When he sits up in the tree (point high in the air)
And he looks at you (circle fingers around eyes)
He flaps his wings (flap arms)
And says "WHOO WHOO!"

Hoot Owl

Five hoot owls sittin’ in a tree
One flew away! How many do you see?
One, two, three, four.

Four hoot owls sittin’ in a tree
One flew away! How many do you see?
One, two, three.

Craft

Owl Puppets
This week we created owls with old greeting card envelopes. Cut large black circles, approximately 3" and medium yellow circles, approximately 2" for the eyes. An orange square folded in half diagonally makes a great triangle nose. If you have feathers children can add those to their owl as well. To assemble, children simply glue their eyes and nose to the envelope, with the open section (where you would slide the card) facing down. When they are finished they can tell owl poems or stories with their owl puppet.

Fall Leaves

This is by far my favorite time of year! The smell of the leaves, the crisp fall air, the gorgeous colors. It could be fall all year if I had my way!
During this beautiful time of year we encourage you to collect leaves and take a walk with your family. Enjoy!

Books
Leaves by David Stein
Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf by Lois Ehlert
Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert
Welcome Fall by Jill Ackerman
Mouse's First Fall by Lauren Thompson

These stories have little to do with leaves but with lots of sickness going around and many children have been out picking pumpkins we added a few titles for fun.

Llama Llama Home with Mama by Anna Dewdney
One Dark Night by Lisa Wheeler
Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper

Songs

Leaves (to the tune of "London Bridge is Falling Down")
Red leaves are falling down, falling down, falling down
Red leaves are falling down
Falling to the ground.

Yellow leaves are swirling down...
Brown leaves are gliding down...

All the leaves are dancing around..

A-P-P-L-E (to the tune of "BINGO")

I know a fruit that grows on trees
And apple is its name-o
A-P-P-L-E, A-P-P-L-E,
A-P-P-L-E,
And apples is its name-o.

Poem

Five Little Apples

Five little apples
Hung in a tree
The farmer wasn’t looking.
So guess who came to eat?
A caterpillar! Munch munch munch!

Four little apples
Hung in a tree
The farmer wasn’t looking.
So guess who came to eat?
A horse! Munch munch munch!

Three little apples
Hung in a tree
The farmer wasn’t looking.
So guess who came to eat?
A pig! Munch munch munch!

Two little apples
Hung in a tree
The farmer wasn’t looking.
So guess who came to eat?
A bird! Munch munch munch!
One little apple
Hung in a tree
The farmer wasn’t looking.
So guess who came to eat?
A scarecrow! Munch munch munch!

Now the tree is bare
There are no more apples there
But when next fall comes around
Guess who’ll be there!
The caterpillar
The horse
The pig
The bird
And the scarecrow!

Craft
Our craft this week was a tree trunk with a variety of leaves. Children can collect leaves from outside to put on their tree or they can cut out their own leaf shapes.

Also, after reading Leaf Man children can create their own leaf man with leaves collected from outside.

Off they go!

Craft

We modified a craft we found at Oriental Trading. We used white and black dot stickers for the the spots and did not place a string for hanging on top. Very cute and simple craft for all ages!!

Community Activity

Contact your local fire and police station to schedule a tour for you and your family. Emergency personnel in our community have been generous with their time and willingness to talk with children and parents about fire safety.
